** Sorry Mike, for a moment I forgot you were not the poster of this information. Makes more sense to me now.

tcope - So, pull the tags. Big deal. Can you tell me why the VO should keep plates, current registration and insurance on a vehicle that will never see the road again? Use your head son.

It's not my call or the insurance companies. The OP can certain cancel the insurance. I'm just pointing out that many state DMV's require person to carry insurance on a vehicle that is license for use on the road. You want to know why they require this? Because the vehicle... is licensed for use on the road. No insurance... no tags. If the OP wants to pull the tags and turn them into the DMV then this is fine.

I suppose it would be fun for the VO to make the insurer or storage place pull the plates and mail them in. Why wouldn't this happen when the insurer takes possession? If not... Why not? If not, what are insurers doing with all of those potentially illegal plates?!!!

The insurance company should be asking the owner to remove to the tags before it's moved to a salvage lot. If they don't, the insurance company will usually have them mailed to the owner if they request. Otherwise the salvage company should handle that issue (I'm betting they do mail them to the DMV or at least report them somehow).
In most states whether functional or not, whether it has license plates or not - you do not have to insure any vehicle you own if it is not being operated on public highways. Period.
I'm not about to post the state requirements from 26 states. I will say that most require you have insurance if the vehicle has tags on it. When do you show proof of insurance? When you get your tags or renew them. Why is this? See my statement above. Since so many people get insurance just to get their tags and then cancel it, states have set up a system whereby insurance companies report when a person's policy expires. This information is compared to current vehicle registrations and if a person has an active registration with no insurance, the registration (tag) is voided. There is _no_ reason to have a valid tag on a vehicle if it's not going to be driven. THAT is why insurance is required on any vehicle with valid registration/tags.

Seriously? tcope - Do you think anyone buys that shinola?

I can only tell you what I know to be a fact.

The "financial services industry" (those are your bosses) has finally been drug out on the carpet and exposed for what they are. Did you miss it? Do you think they are above lying to their employees or instituting unfair practices which compromise the public's economic and corporal well being?

Is this related to the topic of keeping valid insurance on a registered vehicle? If so, it has nothing to do with insurance companies. Its the _states_ that mandate it.

Look - I understand where you folks are coming from. You need a paycheck. So off you go to training (re-education camp) and the rationale for the actions which would otherwise have raised an eyebrow are drummed in until - to you - they make complete sense. Same deal at Merrill Lynch/Lehman Brothers/AIG and the like.

?????? Did we skip medication time today? I have no idea where this is coming from.

Many people who do what I do, have seen all too many times - things done "to" the consumer by "innocent" insurance folks that were just "doing their job".

If you want I can tell you about shitting work and service some body shops have done and how they scam the insurance companies out of money.

Many people who do what I do, have seen all too many times - things done "to" the consumer by "innocent" insurance folks that were just "doing their job". After awhile you see the culture is seems the whole world is in a trance and just can't see the reality that the light at the end of the tunnel is an approaching train.

I guess when you put yourself right in the middle of it and have an opposing point of view, you're going to only see the negative aspect. It's no surprise.

http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/drivers/insurinfo.htm#info

"Missouri law requires that all motor vehicle drivers and owners maintain some type of motor vehicle liability insurance coverage. Unfortunately, each year thousands of Missouri citizens are involved in automobile accidents with drivers who have not maintained the required automobile insurance. The result of this ranges from unpaid collision damage claims to higher insurance premium rates for all Missourians.

Any person who registers a motor vehicle must have liability insurance. Motor vehicle owners are required to show proof of insurance when registering a vehicle and renewing their license plates. You must keep some proof of insurance in your vehicle at all times. If a law enforcement officer asks for proof of insurance and you cannot show it, the officer will issue you a ticket.'

"The Department of Revenue will be notified that you do NOT have insurance on your vehicle or the vehicle you drive if you are in an accident or a police officer asks you to show proof of insurance. At any time, the Department of Revenue may also ask you to prove you have insurance."

Okay Wade, have you tried cleaning the cache as well as the cookies of your computer? At times the problem may arise because of these factors. Please, try it and let me know the result. Meanwhile, I'd check things from my end.

I had my car totaled, I am in the processing of suing the Insurance company. Do I still need to have Insurance even though the car is totaled?? I have to go to court for a ticket and they ask for Insurance.

You should only need sufficient evidence to show that you were insured at the time of the loss. Ask your agent for a any records showing that you were covered at that time. Use bank records of automatic drafts, any cash payments you made, or canceled checks endorsed to show coverage at the time of the loss. An insurance card that shows your policy period from one date to the annual renewal will not show you actually made required payments or were actually covered at the time of the loss.

Del, I think you have two separate issues here

...I had my car totaled, I am in the processing of suing the Insurance company. Do I still need to have Insurance even though the car is totaled??

If the car is non-driveable, does not have a lein, and is in a safe place, no you do not need insurance on it now.

I have to go to court for a ticket and they ask for Insurance.

This is to prove you were insured at the time of your accident...maybe you didn't have your proof at the accident scene? What they (court) will want to see is that you had liability insurance in place on the date of loss.

my car got totaled.but i want my 300 dollar muffler back... i owe 14,000 on that car and there gonna pay 13,000 and my gap insurance will take care of the difference. my question is if i take the mufflers out yeah the acv will drop..but will my gap insurance still take care of the difference?? my insurance will pay less than 1300 if i tak them out so therefore allstate saving money. will it be a problem?

You can take your muffler back, you will need to replace it on the totalled car. No GAP will not cover the difference.

First, Allstate should resist letting you take the muffler if you are not going to replace it. They should do this by telling you that they will share this info with the GAP carrier and that the GAP carrier probably won't address Allstate's reduction in payment due to the vehicle having no muffler. Second, as mentioned, the GAP carrier should not address the reduction in payment because you removed parts from the vehicle.

Last... you paid _a lot_ more for a vehicle then it was worth (not just $1000) but you also put a $300 muffler on it... not a good use of money.
