So I have my licenses for Life and health and P&C, I am getting appointed with all of my Life and Health companies this week. I have my own personal E & O. My question is who do I decide to write my P&C business with? I have been given the name of two companies that I can use to go through until I build my book, Myron and Steves or Texas United. How am I supposed to differ between the two? Am I supposed to have an agency license to do so? or can I use my own personal license being it is just me? I am trying to start my own as an independent agent and am confused about my next step.

Dunkin, I'm sure that you don't want to end up with a company that doesn't keep the promises made both to the clients as well as to the agents. Hence, check the background of both the companies with the state department of insurance before accepting their proposals.
I'm sure that you can get in touch with some of the experienced agents in your locality for the initial guidance and input.
BTW, best of luck for your future.

In addition to the checking with the department of insurance, you may also check with the business rating agencies like- the A.M. Best, J.D. Power Associates, Standard and Poor etc. also racking the information center BBB is a good idea.
However, Myron and Steves seems to have better web presence than Texas United. Just hang tight someone must be shortly available with first hand knowledge.

I'm sure that an additional trade license is required to start an independent agency , unless you share the office premises with someone. Anyway, congratulations of obtaining license. Wishing you all the best!!

I can't find any information about either company other than on their websites... maybe I am doing something wrong..

I have an idea. Whichever company you decide to write for will have someone above you and, for lack of a better term, let's call this your IMO (Independent Marketing Organization). At this IMO, there will undoubtedly be someone with some experience in the company. Interview this person as if you were going to hire them and see who you'd rather work for/with. Trust me; you don't want to start building an agency if you have to report to and sometimes depend on blooming idiots.

Definitely!
You'd be truly lucky if you come across more of such professionals. This would give you an opportunity to know what the common areas of concern are. Also, you'd come to know the different challenges and facts concerning such companies that draw these professionals. Thanks, Roddick
