I currently have allstate auto insurance with no additional policy (1 accident forgiven etc). I was rear ended last month and the case is likely to go into arbitration since the other party is trying to prove that it was my fault even though it was rear ending.
I have repaired the car and paid my deductible.
My current policy is coming for renewal on 15th Nov. So far the premium didnt increase.
Will it increase if the arbitration decides that i was at fault? If yes will it happen during my next renewal or the day the decision is made?
What will happen if i take the additional coverage now (1 accident forgiven with $100 reduced for deductible for accidents on the day of signing the coverage)? Will i get this benefit even though i have taken this coverage after the incident but before the arbitration decision?
How much will be the difference in amount/ year for this additional coverage?
How good is allstate in fighting my case with the arbitration committee?
Do you advise me to go for this coverage now?
I would like to take inputs from Any allstate people. (current or previously with them).
I live in california.
Thanks

The policy rates can't be altered at the middle of the term. Hence, even if the verdict comes after the renewal, the insurer will have to wait till the next renewal to alter the rates.
It seems that you have every doubt in mind that you might be held responsible for the damages caused to the other vehicle? Why so? Have you violated the traffic norms?
Who was cited for the accident? Isn't there a police report?
Are you talking about increasing the limit of your liability coverage?

probably, but what on earth is their defense? how are they blaming you for this loss? Saying you backed up maybe? If yes will it happen during my next renewal or the day the decision is made
As Jeremy said, no rate changes can occur until renewal...there is a good allstate agent on this board, I will pm him and ask that he pop in on this thread...Posted: Tue Nov 11, 2008 02:13 pm Post Subject:
I'm an Allstate agent. Allstate will not change your rates until renewal. If you opt for Your Choice Auto, this change will go into effect the day you make the change - anything that will happen to your policy because of this last accident can still effect premium. However, if you have another accident, while under Your Choice Auto, that accident will be forgiven.
YCA is a good choice for you at this time.
As to the accident, did the driver of the other car get ticketed? How in the world are they saying that you are responsible for the other driver rear-ending you?
Have you asked your agent? Is he/she any help to you? If not, please feel free to message me and we can talk about this.

Thanks to everyone responding to my question:
I didnt call the cops as the accident resulted in only fender-bender and no injuries.
I'm preparing for the worst case. Allstate is good so far and they said they will defend me in arbitration.
I would like to prepare for the worst case scenario if they decide i was at fault?
What are the consequences?
1. My premium will increase (maybe doubled?).
2. Will i get a ticket in mail for this? Will i get a negative point on my drivers record?
I wont be taking the extra coverage now and just renew it for now. i will wait anf watch for the actual decision.
Please let me know if i need to know anything else?
Thanks

Hi Ken, hope you have taken her contact details and insurance information. However, $200.00 damage is very less worth of turning the claim to the insurer, especially, when an at-fault accident influences the premium rate. You may settle the claim with her personally, i.e. asking her to pay you in cash for the repair, but if she insists on going through her insurer better you file the claim with it.

You can't be responsible for the accident when you have been rear ended by another driver (if you haven't backed into him for a case). There is no need for you to worry. Please, don't panic.
1. My premium will increase (maybe doubled?).
If you're at-fault for the accident then your premium rate might increase, but by how much, that'll be decided by the insurer and the underwriter.

No police were called, no report filed - you will not get a ticket.
I don't see how you would get a negative point on your MVR if there was no accident report or ticket written.

Lifeisgood,
This would hold true (no tiecket and MVR) even after i filed a report with DMV cos the damage was greater than $750?
Thanks
