I was in an accident on Monday. The body shop is saying that it's touch and go as to whether the car will be totaled. I don't want it totaled, as I can't afford the money for a down payment. Can I make them fix the car?

I'd size them up... they may be much bigger then you.Short answer, no. There are usually state guidelines that state when an insurance company _must_deem a vehicle a total loss. It's usually when the cost to repair is 80% of it's value. Have you told the body shop and adjuster that you really don't want it to be a total loss? If the insurance company is relying on the shop for the repair cost, perhaps the shop can cut a little of their cost as otherwise they won't make any money off the repairs.
