My husband has had bad luck with driving in Jan of 08' his trailer jack knifed the side of our avalance in snowy conditions. In June of 07' he borrowed my aunts car to go get his paycheck and lost control on a dirt road and hit a dump truck. In may of 08' he totaled my monte carlo when driving to work late at night and swirved to miss a deer. He has a speeding ticket on his record from sept. of 08' when he was gaining speed to go from a 35 to a 55. No OUi's or DUI's. My liscense has one speeding ticket back in 06' and one accident when a woman pulled out in front of me. State farm was my carrier for 12 years and would not renew my policy. So i went to TD insurance, they carried me for 1 mth and dropped me. So i went to Hartford the same thing happend they are only willing to keep me until may 19th . Progressive will carry me for 2600.00 every 6mths. Would it be cheaper to insure my husbands liscense? Both vehicles are in my name with the exception of the car, its both of ours. We live in maine so i'm not sure if there are diffrent laws here or not. We need full coverage, both vehicles are financed. PLEASE..... helppp.

Oh honey...well to be honest, I tell ya' what I'd do, and perhaps your only option short of paying huge premiums.. sell his vehicle, buy one that you can pay for, (no lein) put liability only on it, and exclude him from your vehicle...remembering if you do so he can NEVER EVER drive it, (there would be NO coverage)....until his driving record is cleaned up some...I really don't see any other way, and that's only 'if' Maine allows spousal exclusions...it seems you have gone to several carriers with the same result...if the above is not an option then I would say go to an 'independent' agent, (one that sells for many carriers) go in and set down with them, and tell them everything they should have access to many different companys, and plans, maybe they can rate him in a high risk company and you in a general company? unfortunately his bad luck is going to affect you for some time (minimally three years, would be my bet)....

I'm sorry, I can't think of any other way out of this, perhaps others will drop in on the thread with other/better suggestions....hang in there..

oh wait i just thought of something...most states REQUIRE that ins company take a certain number of 'hard to ins' folks...however, I don't see it on their site, (i'm sure it's there I'm just not seeing it)

I checked maine's dept of ins site, and i see now how they keep canceling you...per the site:

three speeding convictions in the prior three years,
conviction of operating under the influence during the prior three years,
conviction of operating after the license has been suspended or revoked,
One driver having two or more accidents in the prior three years that results in bodily injury or property damage in excess of $1,000 - or- the total number of accidents of all drivers (with bodily injury or property damage in excess of $1,000 for each accident) that exceeds the number of vehicles that are insured in the household by the same insurer.

If you want you might try this number and see if the Maine dept of ins. consumer assistant dept can help you

Lori is right with her assessment; it’d be hard to get insurance policy with such driving record and obviously the insurers would charge higher premium rates for coverage.

IMO you should help your husband in improving driving record. You can also check if coverage for high-risk drivers are available in your state or not.

Well.. Heres my thought i was wondering if maybe i could purchase a vehicle outright and put liability on it for my husband. Then i could put storage insurance on my avalanche and park it for awhile until the driving record cleans up a bit. Keep full coverage on the car for me only. That should work dont you think?

Will the finance company of the avalanche allow that?

Well i just spoke with my current insurance company and they said it doesnt matter if i purchase a vehicle and put liablity on it. When i insure the car its in both of our names(the registration) and the insurance will have to be in both of our names as well. In Maine if your married both of the names need to be on the policy? So basically i feel stuck to paying 400.00 a mth for insurance.

Lissa, many insurance companies won't allow spouse exclusion since your husband can take possession of the car anytime. And not only in Maine, spouse exclusion isn't an option in some other states as well, like-NC.

I empathies with you but, yeah, you probably are stuck with higher premium rate for the time being.

Lisa did you ask your agent if you owned one vehicle in your name only and one in his name only if you could exclude him from your vehicle? I'm not clear from your post if Maine allows spousal exclusion or not. Or is it just because he is an owner? (registered in his name too) that he must be on the policy...

Sorry Lisa, guess one other option might be to trade or sell atleast one of them and buy a cheaper one that you can carry just liability on, for your husband, would still be cheaper than you are paying now.

If Maine allows spousal exclusion (and the problem is the registration)...then sell/trade them both (at least on paper) and put one in his name and one in yours...his rate is still going to be high but yours should drop...might run that by your agent too.

As far as the storage ins idea, ins epid. is right your lein holder may not allow it, however they might too, since collision and comp is what they insist you carry...worth a call..

IMO the fin company might not disagree either. Anyway she is going to maintain the coll & comp coverage on the car and since it would be off the road no need to carry liability on it. Am I right? Or, the financing company can actually raise issues if she drops liability coverage on it?

generally speaking, 'sleeping' policys only carry comp, however I'm sure her lein holder would require collision as well..lein holders never (that i've seen) require liability coverage only collision and comp(they just want their collateral covered)...so they ''might'' bite on the idea.

You can always divorce your husband and you wont have to include him.
