my son just last night had his car broken in to and lost a digital camera, GPS , and a laptop computer, all at a value of approximately $1475. He has no renters insurance or burglary coverage and only has full coverage on his car..ie comprehensive, collision and liability. Does he have any recourse towards this loss?

Not under the auto policy, only under some type of property policy.
P.S. I always ask myself if I'd leave that much cash sitting on the seat. If not, I don't leave the items either.

Only the car and its components are covered under the comprehensive coverage of your auto policy and not the expensive items left in the car. Tcope is right, the homeowners insurance may cover the items as it offers extended coverage to such items.

He has no renters insurance
on the car or on the property he lives in?
Sorry, personal belongings are not covered under the auto policy. However, the auto insurer will cover the damages caused to the vehicle, but absolutely no coverage for the stolen digi cam and laptop. If he doesn't have the renter's policy even. then I guess he is out of luck.
Anyway, at times you have to learn the lesson of life in the hard way :(

Tough lesson that we adjusters see learned monthly....auto policys do not cover PERSONAL property...get the boy a renters policy they're pretty cheap but be sure and read the part about person property 'theft' for an exclusion about personal property while ''in or upon a land motor vehicle''.
