Hey, shopping around is the best alternative. Hence, if you have decided to go for a cheaper policy, start looking for policies that are available at a lower cost. Many companies offer their quotes online along with the rates of their competitors.

However, shopping around doesn't ensure lower cost, the rate of the premium may also depend upon your driving history, premium payment history and claim record. Also settling for a lower rate may not always be the good idea, you should also compare the coverage while searching for insurance.

Apart from switching the insurer (which can always be the solution) there are other methods available to lower the auto premium rate with the present provider.

  • Upgrade the security service: installing anti theft devices in the car may help you in getting discounts on your premium rate.

  • Insuring more then one car with the insurer may attract multiple car discounts on the policy. Also purchasing both your home and auto policy form the same insurer can fetch you discounts on premium rates.

  • Revise your coverage requirement time-to-time: this can give you the idea of how much coverage you may need to carry and thus you can dispose of the redundant coverage.

  • Get your mileage re-checked: it is said that people driving more are at greater risk of facing accident and many insurers offer discount for drivers, who drive lesser mileage.

Hope it helps.

Thanks,
Rupert

You can switch carriers at any time...

You would be amazed at how much you can save by shopping around. I have been with the same carrier forever and when I started comparing what I was paying with some other family members I was surprised they were paying less than me. I have a perfect driving record and even a bigger deduct. so I started calling around. I found some places that with combining my auto and home owners (I do with my present carrier also) I could save a couple hundred a year.

Even at times it could like insuring both of your cars with the same cost as that of one. You could try finding this out by calling your own agent. On the other hand, you may just check it with a carrier while you obtain his quote online. Many of these carriers would offer you some discounts if you're gonna cover both of your cars with them. Hi,
It seems better that under circumstances when we have planned to sell-off one of our cars, we'd rather show it as a liability and avail the multiple car discount. What do you seniors have to say about it!
I'm sure many of us are shocked to face a premium-hike when we'd call up our carrier to take-off one of our cars covered with them. Plasticmind

A quick fix to lower insurance rates would be raising the deductible for comp and collission. Of course, this means more money out of your pocket should something happen to your car.

Tell us what kind of car you have, driving record, credit status, etc.

Oh...and what color is your car - insurance companies are notorious for sticking it to people with red cars.

My friend..you could perhaps save a lot by obtaining an yearly auto insurance policy. In comparison if you're gonna opt for a 6 month-duration policy, then I'm sure you stand the chance of facing premium hikes after every 6 months. What do ya think! Crossbreed

Hi, you may avoid paying for your collision coverage if your car remains stored in a closet for a considerable period of time. You don't need the liability coverage for it, since the chances of its getting involved in an accident are not there anymore. For this entire period you'd just need to pay for the comprehensive coverage.

Mermaid - if their house is big enough for their car to fit in the closet, they probably don't need to worry about cutting insurance prices.

(couldn't resist)

There are some companies that only offer 6 month policies so looking for a yearly policy might lower your range of companies to deal with.
