Does a typical auto policy issued to a US citizen cover that person traveling in that auto outside of the US?

Depends on the policy. There is a section that lists the Coverage Territory. Typically I see coverage being extended to Canada and Puerto Rico. Mexico requires a Mexican policy so US carriers don't extend coverage there.

Hi, most certainly the insurer will not cover you outside the country. However, some USA insurers may extend the coverage to Mexico for certain number of days, but you may have to obtain a permanent coverage if you decide to stay there for longer period of time.

Hey, you can go through the following discussions to understand your situation better.

As Tcope posted it's policy specific and will tell you in the policy....Most I've seen are as T said.

However, some USA insurers may extend the coverage to Mexico for certain number of days,

I've personally never seen a policy that covered anything in Mexico, but that may be in states that are at the border.

If the poster is going to be there a while is there a possibility of maybe purchasing a small policy for the time they will be there?

I think that's the thing the OP has to do while staying abroad. The insurance company wouldn't cover you simply on the fact that it would be difficult for them to investigate into the accident that has happened outside the country. Also, the driving laws vary wide between the countries. Then there is the red tapism. All these factors together would prevent the insurer from extending the coverage away from home.

THIS IS ONE OF SEVERAL THREADS THAT MY POST HAS BEEN DELETED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so..I guess I'll have to post again ( I shouldn't have to, however.) A friend of mine had to go to Germany ( was stationed there, for the Military). She DID have Auto Insurance in the USA. However...........because she was there for so long, she had to get her auto covered there. She was telling me that insurance, in Germany, is MUCH MORE higher than the USA.

I imagine prices in insurance varies from palce to place. A good way to find coverage is to call your agent and inform him or her of your intenetions of visiting outside the United States. They would have more information to help you find what you need since this is their field of work.
