my car was stolen back on 9-1-08. i filled a claim the next the day and my car was found one day after that. my so called "claims adjuster" said that the insurance company has 30 days to settle the claim. it has now been 9 weeks and they are still passing my claim around the company. does anybody know if the insurance company has a certain amount of time to take care of this? or am i just stuck bugging them everyday with phone calls?

Differs from state to state and many states don't have a statutory time frame but most Good Faith practices allow for 30 days unless there is some good reason for not being able to settle the claim.

I'd recommend filing a complaint with your state's Dept of Insurance and also moving up the company ladder. Call the person's supervisor and if they don't speak to you within 24 hours call that person's supervisor. Keep doing this until you get an answer and/or the DOI holds them accountable.

The should've already given you a reason why they needed additional time to investigate...what was it?

I can not imagine stolen vehicle cases being easy to handle.

how long have you had your insurance? if you just got your insurance recently they might take a little longer due to fraud investigation

Also are dealing with the claims department or the agent because you might not be dealing with the right person and that could be why this is taking a long time

now i know state to state it varies in the amount of time and whether or not their is a provision to allow you to complain about the speed of their response to your claim

Take these questions into consideration and if things don't pick up in the next month or so talk to someone at your state DOI(department of insurance)

Not all states have a time frame within which the insurance companies have to settle the claims. However, the insurance companies are required to acknowledge the claims as fast as they can, ideally within 30 days, but many a times may need to extend the time period in order to prove into the matter. And in case of stolen vehicles it can even take about a year for the insurance company to collect all the relevant information to award the claim to the claimant.

Just keep hope you may hear from the insurance adjuster soon enough.

And if anybody reading this has an insurance company that will take a year to settle, call me for a quote!

I would never put up with that. I am glad that Life and T let us know it really doesn't take that long.

WHAT? Get outta town! no way...sorry Jeremy but you make it sound like that is the norm....I've NEVER EVER heard of any claim other than injury claims that took a year to settle, much less 'collect the relevant information'....please explain where you came up with this information...and I'm with T pick us up applications for that company, because clearly there are no checks and balances, state dept of insurance, fair claims practices or supervisors and managers...
