Once you have gotten estimates on your car to be repaired, does the insurance company have to cut the check to the repair shop or can I request they send the check directly to me.

Depends. If this is your carrier and you have a lien on the vehicle the insurance company may either put the lien holders name on the check or the body shops instead. In both cases, your name should be on the check as well. If this is not your carrier, the check should have your name on the check. If you took the vehicle into one of the insurance companies preferred shops, they may also put the body shops name on the check in addition to your own.

I have my vehicle financed through a finance company. I have 'Full Coverage' THROUGH the loan. When I needed my car repaired, the Insurance sent the check to the repair shop, with BOTH their name and my name on it. We BOTH had to sign it.

Normally, if you are involved in a third party claim, the check will be written to you. You may then decide whether or not to repair the car. Also you can get the car fixed at a lower rate and pocket the difference. However, I think if the repair work is already in progress and if it's a body shop of the company's direct repair program, the claim check is likely to have the name of the repairer on it.

yes sounds as if it depends on whether it is a third party claim or one with your own insurer. Usually third party claim checks are paid directly to the person whos vehicle was damaged. We have always just had the checks sent to the repair shop when we had any damage done to our vehicles. It just seemed simplier since we always repaired whatever damage was done.

I like the idea of the check going DIRECTLY to the 'shop' That way you know they are getting the payment.

Problem with that is what if the repairs were not done correctly? The vehicle owner is left out in the cold. Also, the vehicle owner could argue that they were never paid for the damage. In a way they would be correct.

Yea.....I see your point. If the check DID go directly to the shop, the insured TECHNICALLY could say they din't gget paid. I guess you could go 'either way' with this one.
