Hi,
I am away for a few months and have parked my car at a friends house in his garage. Do I still need to have my car insured if I am not going to use it? Car is worth about £5-6k. Thanks :)

It depends on the regulations for the state/country that the vehicle is parked. Contact your agent or carrier, and inquire about 'sleeping' or 'garage' coverage. Many people will do this with seasonal vehicles, (ie motorcycles, boats, etc). What it means is that for this period that the vehicle is not in use, and is only garaged, it has comprehensive coverage only on it. In the USA, some states and companys allow this some do not.

i dont think so, because although you are not using your car, there are chances your car being hit in parking spot, or vandalism, weather/hurricane etc...
You might move to liability if you want to save bucks
Sometimes its true, you feel you are paying too much for your insurance.

Hi Sarmedm,
Is your friend going to use the car while you are away?
A lot would depend upon your answer to this question. If your friend is going to have the access to the car, you might have to maintain full coverage on it, including liability.
Thanks,
Rupert

LORI.....'you' would think WHATEVER state you live in, they would want you to have your prorperty covered. It was a good point made about the vandalism, etc.Posted: Tue Jul 14, 2009 10:49 am Post Subject:

only problem is that vandalism is covered under the comprehensive coverage, that coverage is not required by ANY state. Same with weather, fire etc. So even if the OP maintained state required minimums he/she wouldn't be covered for the peril of vandalism unless he kept comp on it.Most people when they are going to park or garage a vehicle for an extended period of time drop all coverages except comp.

OIC, LORI.......in ALL states you need, at least, the 'minimum' coverage? If you DO let the policy 'lapse', don't you have to pay TWICE as much to start the policy ( '2 months in advance' type of thing?) again? When I wrecked my Jeep, I din't let my policy lapse. I was told, by 'my' Insurance Co, if I did, I would have to pay twice as much to start the policy again...I just switched vehicles on my policy.

Hi Sarmedm..
Would you share which place you're from?
This would certainly help us to guide you in a better way!

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think vandalisim is the main reason to keep it insured. No one will drive it though. I live in UK by the way. I could have changed it to 3 party and hence gained the reduced premium but it is worth over 5000k so they wouldn't do it.

Are you saying that third party insurance premium is costing you 5000K or the calue today is 5000K. If it is the former then I would suggest you to talk to your insurers and get some customised policy.
