High-risk car drivers are always different in the eyes of insurance carriers. Are there any high-risk auto insurers who cover such drivers?

Yes...there are some 'out there' to cover high risk. However.....are you talking a 'new' driver (a teenager)..or...are you talking someone who has a 'not so good' driving record (DUI's,etc.)? Just curious.

There are non-standard companies that write higher risk policies. But the premiums are going to be more and it can be difficult to move from a non-standard company to one that writes standard policies.

No DUIs..but yeah fender benders on a couple of occasions. How do we distinguish between standard and non-standard companies?

Standard companies are the ones that charge a reasonable fee. If you need to sign over your first born son, it's non-standard.

See, all insurance carriers have separate guidelines to distinguish between normal and high-risk drivers. Some of them will look for traffic violations and damages caused by them, while some other will simply look for their credit history. A lower credit rating will signify more risk in terms of insurance claims.

The Insurance company, I use, does both- they look at your driving recored AND do credit checks (they do this occasionally).

Yes they'd usually go for both types of checks. It's a big concern for all insurers if we haven't had coverage during a particular phase in the past. They'd probably place us in the high-risk profile.

All companies look at driving record and claim history. Most look at credit scoring at some level. The worse the driving record, claim history and credit score is the closer you get to non standard. Most companies that focus on standard business will allow some claim and driving record activity. At some point, you can no longer qualify for coverage with that company. You then begin to enter into the non standard area. Progressive does a pretty good job with both standard and non standard drivers. Just one to consider.
