I've retired (last year) after serving as an active-duty member of the force. Could I be eligible for any Military auto insurance discounts?

I've heard that there are quite a few insurers that offer auto insurance discounts to military personnel. I think it's important to compare premium rates as these rates may vary considerably.

I might suggest that you start with USAA, which is specifically established to provide insurance products to active and retired members of the military and their families. But, you'll have to do your due diligence and check comparable coverage from at least 2 or 3 other insurers. Easy enough to do online by going directly to company websites.

Hi Max, how will it act towards an active member of our military? What will happen to this military auto coverage once we're deployed in Iraq for about 6 months?

I have not seen an auto contract from USAA specifically. But if your vehicle is parked or, better yet, stored, and not being driven by anyone else while you're deployed, you might be eligible for a refund of a portion of the premium for the liability coverage. You would probably not want to cancel the insurance, especially if the vehicle is still being paid for, if it's covered for collision and other than collision, because those losses can still occur while you're 12,000 miles away.
My son just returned a few weeks ago from his six months at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan (VMAQ3, Cherry Point NC), and he'll be returning to USMCAGCC Twentynine Palms, CA in a couple of months to begin finishing the last 5 of his 20 years.

Max, I'm sure you have true good reasons to be proud of your son. It feels nice whenever I hear of someone coming back from Iraq or Afganistan.

Actually, "two good reasons" -- Makena and Makayla -- my granddaughters who haven't seen their Daddy since last summer. They were featured twice on a local television station newscast in Eastern Washington state last November. The video was posted online for a while and was seen by folks around the world, too.
These two "affairs" foisted upon us by George W. Bush almost 8 years ago were ill-conceived from the outset. Too many valiant men and women have paid the ultimate price, and thousands of others have been left totally disabled . . . with little support from our government . . . from IEDs and traumatic brain injuries, amputations of fingers, hands, arms, feet and legs, and eyes rendered useless due to shrapnel.
For what? To establish democracy in a part of the world that still lives in tribal groups that have been at war with one another for 700 years over religious misunderstandings? Won't happen in my lifetime.
For a guy who says, "If you don't leave me alone, I'll switch sides and join the Taliban. And I'm the president of the country." I don't think so. Should have pulled out 100% of the troops the day after he made that comment. He'd have met the Taliban by now.
We train up our military and its leaders to prosecute war, and then the politicians say, "Now make sure no 'innocents' get hurt." How pathetic is that? And that started with McArthur and Truman back in Korea, and it's been the same for 60 years. For all his speechifying and rhetoric, Barack Obama appears to be as much a spineless warmonger as was his predecessor.
Enough political stuff. We'll pray for your son's safety and well being.
