He certainly needs to be insured, SD if he is going to drive and its said that the cheapest way to insure a young driver is by adding him to the parent's policy. And, since he is going to drive your car, you definitely need to be preempt in disclosing it to the insurance company.

my son does not live with me, but do i need to cover him in my insurance for him to drive my car?

I think if your son regularly drives your car you should cover him. Otherwise PIP will cover your son unless you have purposefully listed him out. Any injury to someone driving your car with your permission will be covered under PIP. So even if your son doesn't live with you if he is a regular driver get him insured.

When my son starts driving my car, does HE need a policy of his own,..OR..is he 'covered' under MY policy? I'm getting a few 'conflicting' answers to this one.

SD your situation is different as he's a memeber of your household...he doesn't need his own policy unless he has a car.. he will/does need to be added to your vehicle as a driver when he gets his license...

Thank you, ALL, for your advice. Yes...my son DOES live with me. He's not driving yet, but, I just wanted to know the best 'route' to go when he DOES start driving.

they do not need to own an insurance, as long as you allow them to drive your car. however, if your insurance policy excludes this, he will need an insurance.

If a driver has his own insurance on his own vehicle and is driving another vehicle, that does not have insurance unknowningly and wrecks it. Does the insurance carry over to that vehicle that was wrecked or any other vehicle involved in the accident? Even though the actualy vehicle that was wrecked had no insurance? Please help!

My friend! It is simply illegal in 48 states (apart from WI & NH) to drive a car on public roads that has no insurance. Just forget about your insurance cover for the wreck.

As usual, mangoqurious is wrong, and his information is not to be trusted.

Your personal auto insurance will apply as secondary coverage to the same extent it would have if it were your own vehicle.

A vehicle does not have to be insured, per se, but the driver does. It is unlawful for a person to operate a vehicle on the public highways without proof of financial responsibility. In most states, however, it is also not possible to register/renew the registration of a vehicle which is not covered by insurance, but that does not prevent the vehicle from being driven on the public highways.
