Insuring a vehicle in Canada with American insurance?

Hello everyone. I am a 20 year student living in Ontario and desperately need a car for better employment opportunities and which would also cut transit times from home to school drastically. There problem is not buying a car but the ridiculous insurance rates. From the quotes that I gathered it would be around $7000+ a year for a 93 Honda Accord. I have no one to be put under as second driver which would make insurance very cheap. I do have an aunt living in Virginia who has offered to cover me on her insurance if it was possible to do so.

Does anyone know if it is possible in anyway to have a car insured in Ontario by her insurance company? Thanks.

You could... but someone would probably need to lie on the application and that would great all kinds of problems. The insurance company is probably going to ask where the car is garaged. When they are told in Canada, they are probably going to ask what the situation is. Once they find out they _may_ not want to insure you under her policy... but this is up to them. Some insurance companies might not care. Also, most carrier might not be able to cover a car that is "garaged" in another country. While their coverage territory might include Canada, I don't know that they would allow a vehicle to be garaged there. You can always ask.

Hi, I guess what tcope has said is right. An US insurance provider may or may not cover a car in Canada. Well, some insurers may extend their coverage to their policy holder while they are visiting Canada, but that would be a temporary coverage. In order to cover the vehicle you may need to buy a regular policy from Canadian provider.

Ask you aunt to confirm the availability of coverage for you with her agent. Also you may need to check with Canadian authority whether or not you'd recognize US coverage on your car. these cross border situations can be tricky at times.
