The best and most precise answer that I may give you is to make the call directly to the insurance department in your state or visit their website.Laws are constantly changing and being ammended and unless you are speaking directly to the source, you are could waste a lot of time and money.
I personally have an old conviction of forgery(PROBATION AND FINES ONLY). I was led to beleive for years that it was impossible to enter the insurance or real estate field. I now have both licences. Be persistence, know your rights, tell the truth on all applications. Most insurance departments will consider the crime, the lapse of time that has passed, if more crimes has been committted, and if all past fines, community service has been paid. God Bless!

Just want to say, STARGAZER...it REALLY sounds like you're putting your life 'back together' again. Good for you!! :lol: I'm sure the information you gave ( about 'not giving up'..) will help alot of people, on this forum.
