Insurance check for OME parts

Okay, my car was vandalized and the fuel tank was damaged by car thieves. My insurance company wants to replace the tank with the re-manufactured OEM part. But I can get it repaired with an aftermarket part at much lower cost. Would my insurance company pay for the remanufactured part? Or they would lower the value of the claim if I fix it with after-market part? I can do some other repair work with the money saved on this claim check. Any advice?

Hi,

Sometimes it's hard to differentiate between the OEM and the aftermarket parts. Your adjuster would probably try and explain to you the quality of aftermarket parts against the OEM. The simple fact is that the insured would often want to replace the damaged parts with new parts without realizing that the damaged parts had been much older.

Some of the state-guidelines would necessitate a carrier to seek the insured's permission before using aftermarket parts towards the repair work. Please check up with your state norms.

Hi Rod, I have a friend who would do the same job (replacing the fuel tank) at a cheaper rate than the company suggested bodyshop. He has told me that after market parts would perform the same way as the OME parts. I can save couple of hundreds by doing so. My concern is whether the company will write the check on the value of the OME tank or they would lower the check amount for AME part? Thanks for your time!
