Requesting premium discounts for unused car..

Friends,
I'd love to spend the winters in Florida and don't wish to get my car along with me. I say this since I'm quite sure to stay indoors most of the time during the vacation. Is there any option for me to stop my car insurance carrier from charging me for this period?

Have you called your carrier and asked? They would probably be best at answering this question.

Depending upon the company's business policy and also depending upon your relation with your carrier, you may receive discount on the car insurance rate for the time you'll not drive it. However, it wouldn't be wise to dispose off the coverage on it since some incidents can't be avoided.

If the vehicle is housed inside a garage for an extended period of time, some carriers offer a 'sleeping' period meaning the vehicle carries comp only during that period

Echo Lori - we call it "suspending" coverage. This way you are still covered if a meterorite falls from the sky and destroys your vehicle.

Guys, in my opinion the question could make us think a lot more than we feel. None, would really love to pay a lot towards Auto insurance. By saying that..I'd also like you all to remember how auto insurance could be really different than being a mere protection from accidents. Remember all those different aspects that are being associated with Auto insurance. I'd rather feel its a dynamic coverage that has different segments aimed at different objectives. Plasticmind

My friend,

I'd like you to imagine situations wherein theft or burglary may cause unforeseen losses to you. There could even be instances of hooliganism when your car is parked somewhere (in your absence). So, I'd rather suggest you to suspend your policy partially for such benefits that won't be necessary when it is stationed for a longer period. But, it would certainly be unwise for you to curtail it fully..now the choice is yours! Purpleheaded08

Well, that would depend a lot on the State rules and the policies laid by your carrier. Since it is common with most states to enforce a minimum insurance requirement, hence altering the coverage benefits might just terminate your registration. Even when the state permits you to go for it, may be your carrier won't allow you such alterations. So, you'd need to call your carrier for further information in this regard.
