I am interested in purchasing a totaled car. How do I go about finding a lot or auction lot for such cars in the Kansas City Area. Thank you in advance.
(JCL left this note in my quick mail, however since he/she isn't a registered user i cannot respond back so hoping they come back and find this thread--lori)

JC the company I work for and many others sell their vehicle thru the Ins. auto auction (IAA) they are nation wide, and you can bid on line...
Here is the url for their kansas city yard/auction

Hey JC, any particular reason to buy totaled vehicle?? If you aren't running a body shop and want the car for personal uses, you may have to invest a lot on the vehicle to make it road worthy again. Further an auctioned vehicle will fetch lower value if meet an accident and totals.

Jeorge alot of vehicles that are totaled/salvage vehicles are perfectly fine to drive, many without any 'required' work...I know a lot of people that buy total losses and either rebuild them or have them rebuilt or just drive them....and the reason of course is because they are so cheap....most people doing this would carry liability only but of course you are right if they do carry coll/comp and the vehicle totals, it will be worth much less, and will total quicker due to this reduced value...which is a whole 'nuther' issue.

That would be MY question, too. Why pay for a totaled car? I guess if you're willing to put the time and efort in re-building it, I suppose it would be worth it. Also..........I guess, if 'you' DO re-build it, YOU know what parts, etc. are being used..right? If the car can be driveable, etc.

SD there are REALLY good deals out there as well for 'daily drivers' example ins. company has to total a 1990 neon only thing wrong with it is it needs a couple of headlamps and bumper cover, but it also has some prior hail etc...car only has 80k on it, or less...if you can buy this at the auction for 200 bucks put two h/lamps in it and maybe drive it for years .... that is just one reason to buy a total loss...lots of people do this for first cars for their kids, and if you know what you're looking at or ask someone that does to help you look...these can be perfectly safe vehicles, with a lot of life left in them...another thing i've been seeing a lot of after gas hit about 3 bucks a gallon people buying these as their daily drivers and leaving the giant suv at home..
