I put plates on my car to drive it to my storage unit. Do I still need to keep insurance on it in the state of Ohio?

You will need to keep insurance coverage if you plan on keeping registration tags and any inspections current. You may be surprised at how much it would cost you if you drop insurance coverage under certain circumstances. A lot of times dropping a vehicle will increase rates due to multiple car discounts and other discounts that drivers get while insuring more than one vehicle. So you may want to consider keeping it covered and who knows you may need it someday and you can't drive it without coverage.

If its only a short stint then I'd recommend you to maintain coverage on it. As justong has mentioned a lapsed coverage can affect the future premium rates.

However, if you are planning to keep the car in the garage for a long period then you may drop the liability coverage on, but keep the collision coverage to protect it from theft, vandalism, arson and other such perils.

but keep the collision coverage

He means comprehensive coverage. Some insurance companies will allow you to have comprehensive only on a vehicle if you have more than one vehicle on the policy. And this will not count as having a lapse in coverage, but will put your registration in jeopardy.

Do insurance companies complain when a person drops down to a lesser insurance for a few months? When a policy is written it is usually for 6 months. If that policy is put into place in ,lets say, Oct. and you want to take full coverage off for the winter months because you are not going to drive a vehicle won't they have to rewrite the policy? How does that work?

No lol. We don't complain when you lower your coverages. You do need to bear in mind, though, that if you drop down your coverages (I'm assuming that you mean comp only) it may suspend your registration. Also, most insurance companies will require that you have more than one vehicle on the policy before they will allow you to drop one of your vehicles to comp only.
