I don't currently own an automobile, so I do not have auto insurance. I rented a car and declined the rental car company's insurance coverage, since I have coverage through my credit card (MasterRental). I hit a wall in a parking lot, causing very minor damage to the rental.
If I file a claim through MasterRental, will this affect my future auto insurance premiums just like a regular claim through one's own insurance? I do plan to purchase a car soon. If it will affect my insurance rate, I was thinking about just paying out of pocket if the repair cost is relatively low.

Well, on most applications for insurance I think it might ask if you've had any prior claims...here's a thought, call a couple of 800 numbers for some of the larger carriers, and just ask them...
p.s. are you SURE you have collision coverage on your card for this? Actually I'm quite curious about this...I've handled claims for a lot of years and not seen this (collision coverage)...please do explain this more fully..(what your card has agreed to pay).

Hi chang, I think you're required to find out what exactly is covered under the policy offered by you credit card company. Not all credit card issuer cover all the card holders, some restrict the benefit only to their elite card holders. hence, make sure that you're covered.
Secondly, most often the credit card rental insurance only play the role of secondary coverage, and covers the amount which is not paid by the auto insurance policy of the holder.
Just clarify it first with the credit card company to stay safe. Tk cr

Hi Lori, the credit card rental insurance may cover the collision damages, provided
the renter had paid the rental of the car in full with the credit card
He/she has denied the collision waiver offered by the rental car company.
But the coverage benefits vary widely amongst the credit card companies. Hence, the OP needs to get it clarified by his credit card
provider.
OP, if you register the claim with your credit card it is quite likely to go into your claim report. Also, at the time of purchasing the auto insurance you're required to disclose the fact. Otherwise, the insurer may consider it as an incident of intentional concealment of the fact and may even deny to offer you the coverage owing to this fact.
