Can anybody throw some light towards Car Renting and how your current insurance covers you?

You would need to read your policy or have your agent explain the coverage. Each policy can be slightly different on this matter (some only transfer coverage when the rental is substituting for one of your own vehicles while it's being repaired, many extend coverage to most any rental for whatever reason, etc.)

In fact, the added coverage that car rental companies often try to sell is a MAJOR revenue generator. The likelihood of their being a significant claim is very small, and as a result it adds an incredible amount of profit. A friend of mine works at enterprise, and he gets a very lucrative bonus package if he sells enough added coverage products each month!

It is NOT normally necessary to purchase these, unless of course you are one of the individuals who doesn't see full coverage auto insurance as a good investment. I won't get off on a rant about that group of people...
