Hello,
I have (had) a beautiful mint condition 1996 Infiniti and was rear ended, as well as pushed into the car in front of me.
They will pay me a little over 4K for the car, with a choice of keeping it or turning it over to them (about $100 difference).
I cannot buy a car in anywhere near as good as shape for 4K, and being unemployed am not able to take on payments (like anyone would lend me money anyway).
The car is easily fixable, no mechanical damage at all and I'm driving it now. However, PA it is very difficult to get a car retitled after repairs and my understanding is it can take weeks or months for the paperwork. I cannot be without a car that long.
So I'm thinking of asking the insurance company to not repair the front bumper (It did have scratches on it anyway) to lower the repair bill. Do you think I have a shot at that idea?
Of course, whether I turn the over to them or get a salvage title, I would immediately have to stop driving the car, requiring a rental. This again reducing how much money I have for another car.
I feel like I'm really getting a bad deal. No way I can buy a decent comparable car for 4K with new brakes, exhaust, suspenstion parts in perfect running condition and nearly perfect paint and interior.

Salsaman, please correct me if I've got the idea wrong. You want to reduce the repair bill so that the car doesn't meet the totalled threshold, right?
I guess you are dealing with the other driver's insurance company, have you checked the idea with them? Further, have you been offered rental by the insurer?
