Our current insurance carrier tells us "no", but we are concerned.

I guess that OP wants to know whether her son needs to be in her auto policy for driving with school permit. But then she should confirm my guess.

Hi Lorne,

I guess you've placed your message within the "Subject" text box. Would you kindly post it to the "Message body" instead? Are you really asking about the inclusion of your son to your policy?

The permit he has to drive is in drivers ed only right? is that what you mean by 'school permit'? If so then no you do not nor can you probably add him to your policy...Don't worry at the earliest possible time your carrier will want him added as a driver, (and grab your wallet, it ain't gonna be pretty)....most require that the child actually have their license before they must be added.
