My brother recently died and I'm curious if he had any life insurance other than what he had through his employer, which he left to his daughter. Is there anyway to find out or somewhere to start searching? He was taking care of our mother and has left her with no place to live or money to care for her. His record keeping was horrible and I can't find a thing. Is there someplace to go where I can search for insurance coverage??

Well,... I'm still trying to wrap my brain around what you wrote.
:shock: "My brother recently died...

:wink: I'm sure you didn't mean it the way it reads but it reads as if your brother puposefully died and left Mom to fend for herself. :twisted: :P
:?: :arrow: And forgive me for asking the obvious but can Mom live with you for a few weeks until you sort out the details? :idea:

Well, if he had named his daughter as the beneficiary on his policies, she would receive the benefits. the policy holder can name almost anyone in his/her policy to receive benefits after his death. And, your brother did it right since he is responsible for securing the future of his daughter.
However, you can go by the conventional way of looking for the information, i.e.
* Check with his existing insurer-auto/home.
* Check with the his employer, if he has another policy through them.
* Check with his family, if they know anything about his policies.
* Inquire with his solicitor/agent.
* Look-up the MIB record.

His daughter is getting his life insurance through work by default as his only living heir. They have not had relationship her entire life (mom left before baby was born). But that's not the issue or my concern. I have a full house and no place to put up mom (wheel chair bound). Using her SS Check and retirement we can get her in a residential care facility, but would like to cover additional cost without digging into our kids savings, if you know what I mean. I'm looking for any additional insurance that may be available to help cover cost. He has no records whatsoever I can find, so I was curious if there is a way to find out.
Thanks.

Did your brother NOT HAVE a Beneficiary on his Life Insurance and his employment just 'added' her BECAUSE she was the only Dependent? They had no relationship, AT ALL..wow! That's what I'm getting from this statement. How old is his daughter? Maybe you can question his daughter about the policy..explain the situation you're in.Posted: Fri Jan 30, 2009 01:03 pm Post Subject:

or forever? Sounds like your brother was a very good son....but....the fact of the matter is his daughter is his heir period...if you can appeal to her to help out with grandma then good, but chances are there was no relationship there either nor will she feel any moral obligation....poor mom....Does daughter have any plans to take care of her dad's ''stuff'' ie did he own the home? selling his personal property? if she's not close maybe you could offer to handle this with the understanding that mom gets a percentage of the return?
I just feel terrible for your mother...the sad truth is though most likely he didn't have any other policys other than work, but i'd start by talking with his auto and/or home owners ins agent to see if they are aware of any...If your brother died in a car accident there could also be some money coming from that policy...let us know if so and the facts of loss and maybe we can help find some money there.

Okay, who is gonna take care of the kids? How old are they? If the kids are still minors, who is their appointed guardian?
Now, if you know the name of the insurance company your brother used to deal with, you can directly approach to them and ask for the copies of the plans.
Regards,
Juanita

ok, firstly you said he got a policy through his employer. check with his employer to see if the employer knows if your brother got any other policies. ask his friends to check if he's mentioned anything at all.
have a talk with the daughter. by the way, how old is the daughter? if she's still a minor, who is the guardian? if she's grown up, how is she planning to use the money? discuss with her how to handle the issue about your mother's housing problem. did your brother own a property? was it handed over to his daughter? is his daughter going to continue to live in it or sell it?
