How long a speeding ticket can be held against me ?

I was wondering how long a speeding ticket can be held against me for my insurance purposes? I mean ,right now I have got a speeding ticket and imagine I want to take an insurance of my own some 2 years later and whether the speeding ticket I have got now will have any bearing on the insurance premium I will be asked to pay? And do I have to mention it to the insurance companies about my speeding ticket ?

It's either 5 or 7 years. Some states allow you to take a class (local or even online) shortly after the citation is issued and if completed, your rates cannot be increased. This can only be done on a limited basis (I think once every so many years).

Yes, they'll run a clue anyway and find out could get your *new* policy voided, don't want that happening after a claim is turned in...you do not have an obligation to tell your current carrier however....

Wow that is a long time to stay on your record, I have never had a ticket, I am glad that I haven't if you have to pay the piper for that long.

Depending upon your state of residence the speeding ticket may stay on the report for three to seven years, like in California it may stay on the report for three years. Hence, you need to provide us with your state's name to give the state specific information.

However, the speeding ticket may influence the auto insurance premium. Though for the first ever points you may not face a rate hike, depending upon your company's policy, but the rates will get affected if the habit of moving violation continues. You are likely to experience steep rise in auto insurance premium.

To your future carrier, Yes. It always pays to be pro-active, because anyways the insurance company will pull out your driving record to check your insurability, and as Lori has said, hiding the truth may result in losing the coverage.

However, while informing the insurance company about the tickets, you can also add your reason for speeding that day, but remain truthful.

The insurance companies before pro-rating your premium will also gauge the nature and severity of the violation, and a infringement may only cause a minor hike in the premium rate.
