So pretty much with auto insurance, If I were to get anything stolen from my car that is not pysically attached to the car, these items will not be covered by my auto insurance policy correct? However, if I have a homeowners policy, depending on the items, the homeowners coverage my help pay for a percentage of the loss.

It depends a lot on the actual auto insurance policy. My car was broken into / vandalized several years ago and I had full coverage. I paid my deductible and expected the insurance company to pay for the broken windows and the damage to the dash where the radio was jerked out. I was pleasantly surprised when they covered the cds that were stolen (about $200 worth).

My agent explained to me at the time that their claims adjustors look at the big picture. Had I called and said that I had a Van Gogh painting stolen out of the backseat, I'm sure the result would have been different. My agent said that they will normally cover nominal items if they "belong" in a car.

Once again...depending on your homeowner's policy, theft from your vehicle may or may not be covered. It depends a lot on what your coverages are and where your vehicle was when the theft occured.

There are several adjustors on the forum...and I am by no means an expert in this area...so hopefully we can get some more clarification for you!

Every insurer is different, therefore when one might cover few items in the car the other wouldn't. However, often the renter or homeowners policy would cover such belongings. But, then again every insurer is different. So, read the policy document carefully to avoid the chances of claim denial in the future.

I think items like laptop, camera or jewellery may receive coverage upto a certain limit with the homeowners/renters policy. But policies vary from company to company. Hence, you may get it clarified from your agent. further, you should list these products in the policy and let the insurer know that you likely to carry these items with you when traveling.
