Does anyone know an insurance company that will insure a stored vehicle. I live in Costa Rica, had my car in storage. My insurance carrier dropped me after 20 months. I have to carry insurance because it still has a lein.

My friend, whatever information I've gathered regarding auto insurance in Costa Rica, it shows me how this coverage is a monopoly of the govt. (under the Instituto Nacional de Seguros). A limited liability coverage would come to you through this institute under the supervision of the law. Some specific car accidents as well as a couple of the associated contingencies and deductibles would be covered by the supplemental programs that are being offered by the rental agencies. Some times the rental cost may surpass even the insurance cost.

Evan, according to the OP his insurance company has dropped him very recently.

Now, if in Costa Rica the insurance is completely government regulated it would imply that the government organization is no longer interested in providing the OP with the coverage, and IMO it would then cause him a lot of trouble.

OP, can't you just get hold of an insurance agent in your locality and ask him/her to find you a coverage? And, for what reason the previous company has dropped you?

Guest - are you saying your vehicle is in storage in the States? If so, that changes things a bit.

You're right, if you're still paying on the vehicle, the finance company wants proof of comp and collision. However, if you're not driving the vehicle (since you're in Costa Rica) you may not be required to carry liability. We used to sell comp-only policies, but I've never heard of a comp/collision policy w/o liability coverage. Long answer short - you might not have another option than to get a regular insurance policy while you're in Latin America.

Now that the other company has dropped you, you should call some other companies. If it's been within 30 days, there shouldn't be an issue. They should understand your situation, and may even make an exception for you.

I would think if you're NOT driving the car, and it's just 'sitting', you wouldn't have to have the car covered. A friend of mine was in an accident and he car was 'undriveable' for a while..about 3 months, I think. She had her car parked in her diveway. However.........she took the insurance off of it, because the car wasn't being driven. I don't think that's a 'crime' in any way.

I hope you've seen the difference in opinions as well. Someone has to say that it could a bit different if the vehicle is stored within the states. Also, I'd look at the OP's obligation to maintain coverage due to the lein.
