I have been researching and everyone says the same thing that salvage autos are worth less. I'm worried about the settlement because we have to buy another vehicle with the money, and I'm not sure if we are going to get enough to do so.
We also had the motor rebuilt about 4 months ago so our truck was in perfect running condition.
I can tell you that I will never buy another salvage titled car not even at half the retail. Its just not worth the stress.......

I agree 100% fred...course you agree these two polar opposite examples are not a daily occurance and the exception rather than the rule, i still agree...there is something though that we've never pointed out and would be a state by state thing...as an example in mo and i think iowa as well..if a vehicle is ten years old or maybe it's seven or older...you are not REQUIRED (meaning the ins carrier and veh owner ) to report or brand the vehicle a total...now all states are different in this regard....would it still show on a carfax...i don't know but would guess so, would it show on a dmv report...or title search no...this too isnt' the answer because you and i both know the reason for branding titles in the first place was due to unscrupulous rebuilders...are there dangerous rebuilt vehicles out there ? you bet...are there like wise perfectly fine and safe enough to put MY grandbabies in 'salvaged' vehicles you bet again....i'm with you fred i don't know what the answer is either..

So, in the State of Michigan, is the insurer required to obtain a salvage title on a vehicle if they deeem it a total loss? My daughter's car is that exception...a little fender bender but because the cost of the repairs exceeded its supposed value (Land Rover) they are claiming it a total loss. The car is still very driveable (after the headlight is replaced). Can we fight not to have a salvage title issued on it??

In the United States, a salvage title is a form of vehicle title branding, which notes that the vehicle has been severely damaged and/or deemed a total loss by an insurance company that paid a claim on it. The criteria for determining when a salvage title is issued differ considerably by state. In a minority of states, regulations require a salvage title for stolen vehicles;[1] but, in others, it is issued only for losses due to damage. Under some circumstances, a salvage title denotation may be removed or replaced with a Rebuilt Salvage designation;[2] and cars imported to, or exported from, the United States may be issued a clean title regardless of history.
