Glass

Last year I had a piece of debri from the road fly up and crack my windshield and crack it two days after my inspection. I called my insurance company only to find out that I do not have glass, I had it on my prior policy, this one was supposed to have the same coverage but I found out through experience that it does not.

Anyway, since the crack was near the bottom I waited till my next inspection, next week to get the windshield replaced. Since I had glass on my last policy I know that it was around $250 to replace one, I always had to pay the deductable of $50.

So now with no glass coverage, I shopped and found two shops that could replace my windsheild for $160, that included them coming and picking up the vehicle at my job.

My question is, why is it more for the insurance company to replace the windshield than if I pay for it out of pocket.

I am glad it is the lower price, but I think these prices on repair affect the cost our insurance premium. Is this common practice and why do the insurance carriers let this go on.

In some places the replacement of the windshield will cost around $500 for the originals and $250 to $300 for the aftermarket including installation charges. Are you sure that $160 will cover all the expenses and there is no other cost hidden that you're not aware of?

That's may be because windshield coverage is the no#1 claim that is filed against the auto policy in USA. And, higher frequency of claim also affects the rate. Therefore, glass coverage may cost more.

If you consider a particular coverage as redundant you better choose the option of paying it out-of-pocket.

good, most larger carriers have contracts with national glass chains, that go to the vehicle and replace the glass (not take the vehicle and bring it back! yikes! ).... depends on the 'type' and grade of the glass you are having replaced....and over all the contracts they have with these providers save them a ton of money, now on one particular vehicle in one particular area you might find it cheaper somewhere else, but over all they save money going with these national vendors, then of course the warranty etc.

That explains it pretty well. I am glad to see you didn't have to pay a bundle to fix it. I would have felt a little wary of them taking my vehicle..thats really scary. Are you going to call your insurance comapny and have them add glass?

I guess some states have ''glass'' coverage, in my state it is all covered under comprehensive. are you all saying there is a separate coverage (aside from comp) that covers only glass?

No I just call it that. It probaly is comprehensive. Were just a little backwards. Just like when someone hits a deer we say "do you have deer damage on your policy?". Sometimes it is easier than asking about comprehensive and then having to explain what your talking about. Believe it or not I actually had thought it was called "glass" and "deer" until I was in my mid twenties. When we hit our first deer I called the insurance company and actually asked if we had "deer damage". LOL

Good come back...I liked that.. So say your going down the road and hit a cow.....is this comprehensive too? I actually wonder if that has happened..I bet it has.

I have always referred to it as glass and they specifically said that I had no glass coverage. So yeah, I think that Pa actually has a specific coverage that is called glass, at least that has always been my impression. They always specifically ask about glass.

hey coffee, I had it done last friday, it was $160 total, out the door and delivered to where I work. Only thing is that I did not get my free can of glass cleaner that they promised me.

To the best of my knowledge [which isn't totally non-existent] here in Pennsylvania pretty much anything that strikes your car [other than another car] is covered by Comp.

Things like:

Deer
Bear
Rabbit
Cow
Horse
Dog
Bird
Stone (glass, paint chip, dent, etc.)
Tree limb
Chestnut
Water
Hail stones
Fire
Thief
Vandalism

and a few more that I didn't think of yet.
