A fender bender is a small time auto accident that causes minor damages due to the collision of two vehicles. Even if you are a very good driver with a perfect driving record, you might just end up having a fender bender. Driving is a hazardous thing and you can never predict an accident. Even a most harmless auto accident may make you anxious about your driving record and a raise in premium rates. Thus, it is wise to be prepared and keep in mind the steps that you should take while involved in a fender bender. Following are the five ways that should help you minimize the problems arising from a fender bender: 1. Keeping the documents handy: Always keep a file in your dashboard, carrying all important documents and information. This can include the basic information about the make and model of your car, auto insurance details, automobile service centers and tow truck contact numbers. 2. Not pushing the panic button: Don’t get nervous after the collision though it’s very natural to do so. Think clearly and try to make out the nature and damages of the accident. Get out of your car and send a signal to the other drivers on the road by switching your indicator lights on. This will ensure that the others know that your vehicle is stationary in the middle of traffic. 3. Looking out for injuries: First check yourself for any apparent physical injuries and go over to the other party to check for his/her injuries. Take a note of everything to ensure that things don’t get exaggerated in the future. Some internal injuries and pain related to muscle strains may crop up later, which can be determined by the treating doctor. It’s also important to find out about the health conditions of the other party involved. 4. Collecting the facts: You should collect the maximum amount of information as this would ensure you are hassle free in the future. Talk to the other driver and exchange your contact numbers and insurance details. Take pictures of your car damages as well as the other party’s damages. Contact a traffic police and get the basic statements regarding the accident. You can move your vehicle off the main traffic with the permission of the traffic police. Doing so, you would also be able to check your vehicle’s condition post accident. A vehicle involved in a fender bender should not be totaled and should be drivable. 5. Claiming or notifying your auto insurer: Depending on the damages of your car, you can choose either to make a claim or to notify your insurer. If you have negligible damage then you can choose to get them repaired yourself rather than filing a claim. No matter how little the damage, you should always notify your auto insurance company about the accident and give the required details. You never know if any minor accident can crop up future claims either from your or the other party’s side. Mechanical problems of the vehicle or health problems of the either driver may arise a few days post accident causing to file claims. Thus, it is best to be on the safer side by informing the police and your insurer about it and not to get out of the scene without any notifications. The above points should help you if you do get involved in a fender bender and avoid the hassles arising from it.
