Surviving a flood

If you live in a flood prone zone you know how hazardous it can be. If you don’t, you can still be affected by flood as and when it occurs. Flood can cause a lot of damage. You may not be able to take a lot of precautions to save yourself and your home from it, but you could still try. Here are a few tips about what you can do for flood damages. Prepare before a flood: You know incessant rainfall can cause flood. You can prepare your home and yourself before a probable flood:
  • You could raise your furnace, any electrical panel, or the water heater if there are chances of flooding.
  • Basement walls should be sealed with waterproofing compounds if you want to avoid seepage.
  • Find out from your community officers about any on going plans to build barriers that can stop flood water from entering the houses in the area you live in.
Prepare during a flood:
  • You must keep yourself updated about what is happening through television or the radio.
  • Be cautious of flash floods. Move to higher grounds immediately if there is any possibility of flash flood.
  • If you have to evacuate your home, try and bring in outdoor furniture and move the important items to the upper floor if you have time.
  • Make sure you turn off the main switches and the valves. Disengage any electrical appliances.
  • If you are standing on wet ground or in water, do not touch any electrical appliance.
  • So not walk through moving water. If you have to, then walk in the direction of the water flow.
  • If you are walking through water, pick up a stick to check the firmness of the ground.
  • Avoid driving into flooded areas.
