Men drivers cost the insurance company a lot of money on claims as compared to the women drivers. Naturally, men are charged more money in premiums than women. Women may have just as many accidents as men have, but somehow men manage to get involved in an accident that will cost the insurance companies a fortune. Women on the other hand have minor accidents in their kitty and hence pass on as less risky drivers. Statistics say that about 85% of the serious road accidents involve men. This means that their premium rates naturally get affected.
So, the next question may be, why do women have accidents that are less severe than those that the men have? Studies have shown that women usually do not drive longer distances and it is also combined with slow speed in driving. Of course, there are also exceptions to the rule. However, it holds true that young men between the age group of 16 and 25 pay more premiums compared to young women of the same age group. This is the age when boys try to be men and show off with their cars. Their daredevil tendencies land them in major accidents and these result in huge claims. Young men with their emotional immaturity tend to drive with more aggression than women. Again, male drivers are more prone to breaking the law than women drivers and are more of a risk taker compared to their female counterparts.
Trends are however, changing. Where aggressive and reckless driving once used to be the domain of the boys, girls too are creeping in. More and more examples of aggressive driving by women are coming up lately. Women too are representing poor behavior behind the wheels and if this continues, experts predict that the day will not be far when women will be charged at par premiums with the men for auto insurance.
