Are dental providers prevented from taking negotiated fees?

I was referred to an endodontist in NJ for a possible root canal. After 1 digital xray and a 6 minute consultation I was charged $125 office visit and told that I needed a root canal for $1,245.

I informed the front desk person that my employer does not offer dental insurance and could they offer me a reduced fee, knowing that dental insurance reimburses much less than this full price fee.

Her response was that it was against the law for them to reduce their prices and other offices had been audited and fined for doing so.

This doesn't make any sense.

Can someone who knows the insurance rules let me know if this is bull-cocky?

Well, you're talking about New Jersey. Who knows what goes on there? It does not make sense that the state would prohibit reduced fees for services, since they force the same providers to accept drastically reduced fees for the same services provided under Medicaid.

We'll have to wait for someone with direct knowledge of NJ law to chime in with a different opinion.

So, they're charging you more than $1000 for a root canal. That's quite a bit in my eyes. Now, I don't see a reason why the fees for their charges can't be slashed.
