How to stay covered during pregnancy after quitting job?

My sister is in her second trimester, and cannot bear the strain. She has decided to quit her job. However, she doesn't have an individual health plan and is covered by the employer plan only. Can she opt for a new plan now, or will the coverage stay in effect? Will COBRA work in this case?

First, your sister may want to use her 12 weeks of unpaid leave under the Family Medical Leave act. During that time the employer must continue her cover under the employee benefit plan, subject to any employee share of the cost. This would be superior to quitting and save her from having to pay the full cost of the same insurance plan under the COBRA continuation privilege. When the 12 weeks runs out, if she is unable to return to work, then she could file the paperwork for COBRA continuation and begin paying 100 of the cost of the plan.

Hey Max.. nice advice you gave!

I thought that COBRA might be the only the way out.

Using the "12 weeks of unpaid leave under the Family Medical Leave Act" will evidently be cheaper than continuing health coverage through COBRA.
