Refund of premium

Recently my wife started and new job and our family became eligible under her plan on Jan 6th. I currently have a family plan and tried to cancel the coverage effective the 6th. However, I'm being told its prepaid and will be paid out thu the end of the month. They stated no refund will be given. How can they do that if I became eligible under another plan and have proof.
