Marital status won't affect coverage.

According to the new provisions of the Affordable Care Act, children can remain on their parent's health plan, even if they're married or live separately.

The only exception applies to the grandfathered group plans.

Nice of Stacy to once again leave incomplete and confusing information.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) changed the definition of "child" to include children up to age 26 (meaning not older than age 25 + 364 days). As was stated, the law now makes no distinction for married or non-dependent children.

ERISA governs most employer-sponsored health plans, and the plan could lawfully require a married or non-dependent "child" to enroll in any available employer-sponsored plan that would cover them as an employee as their primary coverage, but cannot exclude them from their parent's plan until they turn age 26.

The few "grandfathered" plans which may terminate coverage for an unmarried non-student dependent at age 19 or an unmarried student-dependent at age 24, and which have not undergone any material changes since Sept 2010, will be required to fully comply with the PPACA on January 1, 2014.
