stuck in the middle

i was injured in an accident as a passenger on a city bus (in Illinois). I did have health insurance at the time of the accident but the policy expired 6 days later. I am currently in physical therapy and paying out of pocket (keeping careful track of everything to be reimbursed from a settlement) The new health insurance company (i had not finalized any paperwork with them at the time of the accident) will only accept me with a waiver so they will not be obligated to pay for expenses related to the accident.

My immediate problem is paying for my pt and doctor visits as both are pay at time of service if no insurance.

Obviously I do not want to settle with the at fault insurance company until I am more recovered.

How can I stall paying? Is there anyway to get temporary immediete relief while awaiting my settlement? I have worked hard to remain debt free, I don't want to carry these bills on credit or loan for an indeterminate amount of time!

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

I wonder, intelligent assassinator, is that really a solution? I hope you'll be little more explicit with it in your next post.

Hi! its quite logical on your part not wanting to settle down before complete recovery. But I doubt there is any alternative available as a stopgap. You need to pay for the immediate expenses out-of-pocket.

Your efforts to stay out of debt is really commendable. You actually can set an example before the people who overlook its importance and end-up being in the mess. Anyways, I'll still search for some info to help you. Btw praying for your quick recovery.

Best wishes,
Helga:)

Good morning riderinthesky and welcome.

First do you have an auto of your own with an auto policy, (probably not since you were on a bus, but thought I'd ask), there could be some medpay coverage there if so.

Most medical care companies are used to dealing with BI claims resulting from auto accidents. Especially P.T.'s. They generally will file a lein with the 'at fault' company against your settlement for full payment of their services. In effect it is a lein the adjuster gets that says basically when settlement time comes, let's say you get 10k, and you have 2k in pt, that out of the 10k they send the 2k to the pt. leaving you with 8k...(all this 'k' talk is making my head hurt! ) These leins are very common, ask the person in charge of insurance about that. It should take care of everything. If not let us know and we'll see if we can't come up with some other ideas.........

Thanks Helga and Lori,

I do have a car and insurance. Looking at the policy now it does list an amount under medical payments. I'll call my agent for more info. Even though I was a passenger in another vehicle my policy would cover it? If I try that route will it count as an accident would or raise my premium?
Any negative repercussions?

I'm sure a lot of people without health insurance have a similar problem. I guess a lot of them do get leins. I'll look into that as well. Also I do not yet have the insurance info for the bus company. I can aquire the police report later this week, but any way to find out enough insurance info to satisfy the pt office online? Thebus company claims agent is hard to get a hold of.

Thanks again.

Yes, unless your state has some odd exclusion I'm unfamilar with.

No, again unless your state has some odd language (ask your agent or dept of ins) but in all states I'm aware, medpay claims are NOT subject to rate increase.

Also I do not yet have the insurance info for the bus company

You haven't had any contact with the insurance company?

Thebus company claims agent is hard to get a hold of.

You should be able to give the p.t. office the company name, and claim number, adjusters name and number and that should be about all they need....let me know..........
