As an automobile salesman for several years ( 20 ) one of the most common insurance claims I noticed was windshield repair. Often times it's something as simple as a rock thrown into your windshield by the auto in front of you. This will cause a small "splatter crack" which of course can spread requiring a total windshield replacement and can quickly cost you at least the deductible on your policy.
However, in many cases you can save this expense by calling a windshield repair specialist. If caught quick enough and before your crack starts to spread, these specialist can repair your windshield to where it is barely noticeable for much less than your deductible. This not only saves that expense but also keeps a recorded claim off your policy which can help keep your overall premium lower.

You are right Megan, but most of the time we are quite late at recognizing the cracks. And that leads us to the big expenses. Can you suggest us some of the ways to check the windshield for damages?

Hi Megan, I'v already suffered from a damaged windshield few months back. Though I hadn't filed a claim with my insurer but had to spend out-of-pocket to fix it. I am keenly interested in learning the ways to keep my car's windshield intact. So, please share your ideas with us all.

lol! Sorry Mega! :wink:What you need to look for or watch for are 'pits' or 'chips' if you run your finger nail over them you will feel that they have pitted or chipped your windshield, this is what can lead to a crack down the road...pits many times will not change unless they are pretty deep, (my company car w/s is literally covered in pits) a chip however that is pretty deep usually will and this will occur when tempatures fluctuate....
Couple of things important to mention...Some states will not allow ''plugging' or repairing of the windshield if it is the drivers 'sight plain', also ''some'' insurance companies will waive your comp deductible if the windshield will repair rather than replace! Something to check on...That is generally a company 'perk'...so ask your agent....

Another little trick I learned over the years that most probably already know but for those who don't involves a simple plunger. Often times you will get those "parking lot" dings in your door panel from shopping carts that other have carelessly left just far enough away from your car as to where it starts rolling it gets enough force to put a nasty ding in your door .
While these dings will often times look very bad the door is actually hollow behind that nice panel. Try taking your plunger to pop it back out. You might be surprised at how often this will work and can save a lot of money versus trying to have a body shop repair done. Simple but often times effective.

There are many companies that 'travel' that do this PDR (paintless dent repair) I have seen some really nasty nasty dents come out clean as a whistle!

I understand your concern :wink: If the insurance companies launch such a policy in the market, my poor husband will be the first one to register for it :D
