Sorry no, they will not pay the claim they are only required to send the renewal to the last address....you knew your insurance was due whether you received notice or not....why didn't parents tell you by the way? Sorry but I've seen this many many times in my many many years....you didn't have coverage because you didn't pay the premium...pure and simple...

PUT IN CHANGE OF ADDRESS, NEVER REC'D RENEWAL BILL.

A similar thing once happened with me. I just committed the mistake of calling up the customer service & altering my data after the bill was being dispatched. Then I forgot to request them to reissue a bill in my present address. Then I found that it would be considered as my own fault since the updation would be effective after 3 days of my informing them & hence it was my duty to inquire them about the bill or else face the penalty. So, would like to ask you whether you're absolutely sure that such a thing didn't happen in your case!

See, even if the insurer has the right to sell off your policy to a third carrier without informing you, they are not bound to share the liability while informing you when your bill is due. It is your responsibility after all, since you're the one enjoying the coverage. Wish you don't commit that mistake again in the future. Had it been life insurance you could have received some benefits (under specific policies) on the pro-rata basis. But, I don't know whether such a thing is possible under Car insurance.

Thanks for sharing your problems with us!

I moved out of parent's house and have been living a 30 miles away at my current address for about 3 years. I changed my driver's license, but not my registration and I never notified my insurance company. My car was recently hit while parked by a neighbor who refuses to pay. I am told that if I file a police report that my insurance company will be notified. Should I be worried about filing the police report? Thanks

is this a different question or are you the OP?

If I'm reading this correctly...even if your insurance policy was notified, it wouldn't matter because your insurance lapsed....right? It wouldn't be covered, for YOU anyway. Or...did I miss something?

On the first (OP) yes...but not necessarily on the question posed by prospect28
