Renters covered?

by jcdoodle » Sat Jun 24, 2006 03:16 pm

Our neighbors rent from my mother-in-law. We recently had a bad storm and the wind tore down the attached carport which damaged the renters riding mower. It has also been blocking access to the backyard where one of their vehicles is parked. From what I'm hearing, renter's insurance covers damage to possessions on the interior of the home but not the outside. Wicked mother-in-law has her claim in to the insurance company for a new carport, etc. and is telling this family "tough luck" on the damage to their mower. Aren't there any laws governing damage to property of renters on the outside of the home under homeowners policies? This is a really nice family and they always pay their rent on time and keep their place immaculate. MIL is always looking to screw somebody out of a buck! Thanks for any feedback.

Do you know whether the neighbor has the renter insurance policy or not? If yes, then ask them to check the policy regarding the coverage of the mower. My understanding is that mower is not supposed to get covered in the policy. In that case they have to repair the mower on their own.
And what your MIL is claiming for, is completely different and might be covered (car port) through her insurance policy.

BTW to which state do you leave?
regards.

Hi…I've heard from sources that there are some 17 such perils as covered by the HO insurance. But as it has been explained there are no such perils as floods or earthquakes as covered by these policies. I don't have any idea as to the place you belong to.

But my friend, let me tell you for sure that if this family belongs to any coastal area then the renters insurance policy won't do. Apart from this they need to get a separate rider policy that would offer coverage for wind damages.

Hiya, real good questions and you've come up with an interesting situation !

I'm sure that the liability coverage offered by your renter's insurance provides for those accidents and injuries which have taken place inside the home as also for the accidents caused by your MIL's property outside the home.

So as far my understanding goes this home-owner's liability coverage if exists in your MIL's renter policy might come to good help of the tenants, since this is a money which might be availed by the tenants only and not by your MIL.
Thanks, Jerry

I found out yesterday they did not have renters insurance. We live in SC.
From everything I've been finding out, they are probably out of luck. The funny thing is though, when the adjustor was there, he said they'd take care of the mower. But now, MIL is saying they won't so they're wondering if she's going to get reimbursed and then pocket the money.
Thank you all for your feedback.
