When it comes to a federal service that's "creditable", you need to have served your duties for a period of 18 months. This is one of the requirements to qualify for FERS benefits.

I'm sure that your disability has to be there for at least an year. Apart from that, you need to get disabled due to your illness or injury while you're still employed under your current position.

In order to satisfy the criteria for FERS disability benefits you'll need to apply for the benefits offered by the SSA. Also remember, that you must apply for the FERS benefits either before your service ends or within an year after it ends.

FERS disability benefits are calculated on the basis of factors like your age and the number of years that you had been in service.

When it comes to FERS disability benefits, I'm only worried about one thing-
the disability benefits are considered as ordinary income and hence taxed. It happens since such benefits are provided by the employer.
