He's on short term disability and to be laid off in 30 days

My friend is out on ST disability. his company has announced that he'd be laid off in 30 days. How will the benefits be affected?

Your friend is entitled to Short Term Disability coverage continuation, if he is laid-off while on Short Term Disability. However, he might not be eligible for Long Term Disability, if he at all needs it.
His benefits are not supposed to be affected.

After a STD claim the benefits are to be paid till the end of the term of the policy or when the insured can return to work.
If your friend qualifies for a long term disability, then the same insurance company is supposed to cover him. But if your friend claims on a new policy, he’ll again have to wait for the elimination period to get over before receiving benefits.
