He went to live with his Dad 3 years ago--we live in the same town--and I have always carried his insurance. I have heard that I am doing this in vain.

Hope, you are well acquainted with what your EQ or emotional quotient stands right now. If its about your son..you might carry on with it since it is about his wellbeing. For that matter, you might just need to enquire about what policy his dad has actually arranged for him.

Hi there,
Then what might have been the reason for your justifying things when you say that you are doing this in vain. Legally I don't see any reason why you can not pay for it unless he is another minor with his daddy holding his custody & is not willing to give it up on you..
But in case he is above 18, it might just be useless for you to carry on with it, unless as you see someone blames it on your emotional attachment or something of that sort :)

Well, when it comes to car insurance I think its always better to check up with the state laws. Am I right!
You have not really mentioned as to which state you're in. Perhaps we might just help you a bit more in case you'd like to share a bit more with us
Thanks, April-the fool

Good morning mlynch719, and welcome to the community...
Let me start by saying I do not understand one post above (other than yours :? )
He went to live with his Dad 3 years ago--we live in the same town--and I have always carried his insurance. I have heard that I am doing this in vain.
We'll need a couple of questions answered...first..who is the titled owner(s) of the vehicle? Is your son a minor? Did you take out the policy and is your boy listed as a driver on the policy...I think you are saying that he has his own car right? not that he is just listed as a driver on your? There should not be a problem...no one else has coverage/policy on the vehicle other than you right? If there are two policys (he or dad paying for a policy as well) then someone is wasting a lot of money, because only one will apply...Let us know the answers and we will do what we can to assist you...I do not think it is in 'vain' at all though...The only problem (right now until you answer) that I can see is maybe that this residence is listed incorrectly...I'd assume he is listed as living with you....(?)....

The car is in my name (and my husband). My son is 17. We have joint custody. He lives with his Dad who refuses to pay for insurance because I bought the car. My son lists his residence as with his Dad, of course, because that is where he lives. Does this help?

Yes it helps alot! Your and your husband then are the registered owners of the vehicle correct? If that is the case, then I can see no problem at all with you all having the policy...is your boy listed as a driver on that vehicle?

yes, he is listed as the driver....We were thinking of putting the car in his name, should we not do that?

Hello, 'Mlynch'..welcome to 'our' forum. I would think if you put your son on as a 'driver', your insurance would go up to 'high risk.' NOT because he is a bad driver, but, because of his age. I think this goes for ALL states ( don't quote me.) I think you BOTH should share the responsibility (you and your husband) with expenses, pertaining to the car.

I see no problem at all the way you have this policy...don't know who would've told you it was in 'vain' and why? :? RE: putting the vehicle in his name...this is a personal choice...when our kids got their vehicles...I insisted that our names (dad and mine) NOT be anywhere on the title other that TOD, some states attribute quite a bit of liablity (or can) to the owners of the vehicle, simply by mere fact of ownership....I've seen a bad case or two in my years of adjusting...so to me it was very important that our names (and assets) not be tied to the kid's cars...all states differ on this however...my personal opinion? If the kid has control of the vehicle I would have it titled in their names only...(again you'll have to check with your state to see if a minor can hold title if he is considered a minor in your state re:vehicle titles, your dmv could give you this information). Then you are going to have to decide about the insurance, personally when my kids were young, (shoot till they were in their early-mid twentys) I paid their insurance and they paid me back every month...I was too scared should they 'run short' they could financially ruin themselves...(a mama thing I guess) Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you think that we may be able to assist you with...

The vain part was that if he were in an accident, I would essentially have NO insurance because of the technicality that he wasnt living with me. Thanks for the input!
