No you are not required to carry vehicle insurance if a vehicle is not on any roadway...you however would be smart to carry comprehensive coverage if the vehicle is of some value (comp covers things like, fire, theft, vandalism etc).

Great point Lori, does the person who owns the storage have to carry any type of coverage to cover items that other people have in storage or is the strictly on the owner of the stored items? Is it considered a content insurance that the owner of the stored items would have to carry?

Most of the time the storage facility will not cover the contents of another...see all those signs ''we are not responsible blah blah'' unless of course in a rare occurance you could prove some kind of gross negligence on the owner of the storage facilitys part...but by in large..no they wouldn't cover the contents only their building.

Most of them will not be responsible for jack, all this verbage is usually in the storage contract too, right Lori? They are pretty clear on what they WON'T cover and what they are NOT responsible. It is probably a smart move on their part though, not being liable. I think it is the person who owns the stored items to fully understand all this going into the contract.

correct! :) And if they were and had a policy to do so (cover the tenants property) imagine what that would cost, then what it would cost to store something! wow, no one could afford it...

You may want to contact the office that handles Ohio's vehicle registration. If they require insurance companies notify them when insurance cancels, you may end up having to fight with the state about the storing of the car. They may require that as long as the car is actively registered, it be insured. These states generally required you turn in the license plates. It's always better to be sure up front than to have to go back and prove something.

States have language in the statutes regarding reasonable care and custody when paying for storage. Look for the term Bailment in your city, county, state codes of regulations or statutes. You might want one of the insurance appraisers explain bailment procedures if they are familiar.
