Can I still collect on my husbands Life Insurance Policy

My husband had a life insurance through his company. He left his job in September with his doctors advice after paying for the insurance for 20 years. He filled out papers in October to switch his policy to a single policy no longer under the company. Sadly two months later his was in a coma and died. While he was in the coma, i received a rejection notice from the life insurance policy. He could not do anything about this because he was in a coma. It seems that his company did not send some papers that they were suppose to send to enable us to get the new
single policy insurance. Is there a time limit on collecting on a policy because of death after an insurance policy is cancelled. Even though the first one was not really cancelled, there was suppose to be a transfer. I live in New York I cannot believe that my fa[/size]mily and myself are not going to get the benefits from this life insurance that my husband paid for 20 years because someone else made a mistake.
Please help by giving me an answer.

If your husband was covered under a group life insurance contract he could not be rejected for such conversion coverage.

Under group life insurance, there is a 30 or 31 day grace period after termination from the group, and death during this time period would be covered under the group policy.

It sounds like you may have a case against the employer for negligence and/or the insurance company for its failure to timely convert the existing coverage. Please email me with more details and we'll see if we can't help you put a case together to collect the death benefit. Click on the blue "Send me your questions" link below.
