have an insurance question

by liaoyu03 » Sat Sep 08, 2007 06:05 pm

Does anyone know this for sure? When my girlfriend got her insurance at work She said she put me as her beneficiary on the life insurance. I have had a few jobs in my lifetime and filled out some insurance forms. I always had to have the beneficiay's date of birth and S.S number. She knows my date of birth but I knew she didn't know my s.s. number. When I asked her didn't they ask for that information she said no. All they asked for was our address. Again, does anyone know for sure if that's even possible? Has anyone been able to do that. I have always trusted her but she does have kids which she puts way before me. And yes, I have her as my beneficiary in case something happens to me.

I cannot tell you for sure, as this could be company or state specific, but I can tell you that I did not have to put my husband's or my children's (who are my contingent beneficiaries) SS # on mine on my work policies or on any others for that matter.

I will say though, that your girlfriends children (I believe I'm correct on this), could certainly dispute this in the event of her death, as could your children (if you have any), should you pass and she is beneficiary, without you two being legally married. It is my understanding that most states would recognize those children as first line heirs. You might want to check that out with an attorney, and a will with it laid out, such as, 'I intentionally did not have my children as primary beneficaries, and instead chose 'insert name here'.

Although certainly no ones business, but you put it in your question, why do you feel her children shouldn't be primary? Just curious, (and maybe a little nosie?)

"I recently lost my job due to layoffs. I am now staying at home with my 15 month old and we (my husband, my baby, and myself) do not have any insurance. Our insurance was through my job. We can't afford to do the Cobra Insurance - it is almost 1000.00 a month! "
