BARRIE –Police in Barrie believe a multimillion-dollar fire in the city's downtown was deliberately set to stage an insurance fraud.

A late-night blaze in early December was preceded by a loud explosion in a restaurant housed in a historic downtown building that dated back to 1877.

There were no injuries, but more than 40 people had to be evacuated from several apartments above the Royal Thai Cuisine restaurant.

Two Toronto residents are now facing charges, and police say they had business connections to the Riviera restaurant, which was also destroyed in the fire.

Two other businesses were gutted, while others suffered damage.

John Cartolano, 62, is charged with arson endangering life, obstructing justice and fraud, and Laverne Williams, 40, is charged with fraud and obstructing justice.

Why in the world would someone risk their life and future for this? The same thing happened locally and the man was busted. Now he is in prison for several years leaving his kids behind basically with nothing.

Well...'Why?' is a nice question to ask...but as simply put it is too complicated to derive an answer for it!
I feel frauds could come down upon us causing us to expend a lot in terms of money & stress but without any proper ideology or aim behind it.

Who knows..may be these people had connections with this restaurant body...& once that connection generated problems...they had started running a loss that became unbearable & caused them to explore deadly ways like this in order to pull out of the possible debts. Who knows!!

Man..when you need money...you need it for that one piece of 'bread' & then you know what you're capable of doing to earn it!

It is that hour which is more important to let you check your lifelong whims & fantasies..& gets you to the right path.

I've gone through forum posts where I've learnt of human beings who had taken the trouble to elope to another land for a considerable time & left back proofs of his death for his beneficiaries, jus to return later with a different identity to enjoy life a wholesome...but got traced back to an old net laid by some legal expert.
See..you can't really predict the twists-n-turns that life has in store for you!

Very true indeed!
Often do we plan such things that we can't accept a fallout of. The worst sufferers are our loved ones.

I'm betting the business was failing and the owner could not afford to pay the bills if it simply closed down. Happens every day.

diem, i agree with you, that this type of things do happen in the world. but........ what advice you will give to those people who have lost enormous amount in the business & now run out of money, investors( banks) are behind them to recover their sum amount , individual investors are making threatening comments. then in this condition what is the best course of action a person should go through.

Amit, I empathize with the people who have lost there assets through economic unrest but that hardly justify the fraud. Any fraudulent claim would get investigated and if found guilty the insured may face severe consequences. So, please stay away from committing fraud.

Exactly...ok true story happened right here in my home town, yr or two ago...qualifys in the stupid criminal category as well as fraud.

Owners of a resturant (oldest in town i think) were struggling...so son-in-law who I presume 'thought' he was helping  with the help of a buddy set the place on fire...gutted it...nearly a completed total...now get this! It was NOT insured! can you even believe that? So son-in-law went to prison, and the owners had to rebuild from scratch (I guess by mortgaging their lives)....they are set to reopen next week I think....so the moral of the story is BEFORE you set blaze to something for the 'ins. money' might want to make sure there is some!

Wow. I thought the first story was bad. Just goes to show when you do not think before you act you have no right to complain when you face the consequences of your actions. These two people in both stories did not only risk their won lives but also others around them. Maybe sitting in the state oen will give them all time to reflect on their stupidity.

thanks jeremy!!

i think this could be nice quote.

Don't 'just do it', think before you leap,

because as you sow, so shall you reap

(due apologies from Nike, for 'just do it')

if these things kept in mind then surely there will be less chances fraud in insurance.

Unfortunately, even knowing what the consequences could be people commit themselves to fraudulent activities. Quite often we hear stories like car owners staging theft of their cars and then claiming against their insurers, or, homeowners faking fire claims for monetary gains. I think that as long as greed would exist in the human society, frauds too will exist.
