Can your doctor force you to pay a copay, just to have him fill out a physical form? He's says he must call it an appt. when I go in today and have this form filled out. Is this legal?

Do you need the form to be completed? If so, call your insurance company and ask them as they are the ones with the contract.

If you don't need the form, you could simply not pay the co-pay.

Yeah, I think the doctor wants to get paid for filling out the form which I can understand but his contract with the carrier might obligate him to do this under a prior visit. I'd think if they allowed a seperate charge for this, they would have a 'code' for it. It appears there is not, so he wants to list it as an 'office visit'. As mentioned, I'd run this by your carrier and see what they say.

I think it's crazy that Dr's can get paid just by the patient filling out a form. Don't 'you' think that's a bit much?! We have to pay OUTRAGEOUS payments, as it is, sometimes. You would think signing your name on a piece of paper would be free.

I have actually had this happen to me several times. I needed a school excuse one time because my son was out of illegal days. I forgot to get it when I was there and knew the school would not except a handwritten note from me. They gladly faxed the excuse to the school house but informed me that they would have to charge me my co-pay on this. When I asked why they had said because the docotr wouldn't do it unless I did. It was cheaper than paying the fine so I just paid the co-pay. Stinks.
I think the next time I will call to their attention what T scope mentioned about a code and see what reply there is.

THAT part might be a little crooked and something to ask your health carrier, like fire I've been charged for this as well...sucks and stinks, but you're over a barrell and they know it.

Hate those times when they get you over barrell. I can just remember hearing this so many times...like when my step father was applying for disability and my mom was storming over having to pay to have forms filled out. If you stop and think about it I bet a doctor can really have sometime in filling out documents., esp;ecially if its more than a signature.
