I'll be on a visit to China this year. I'll need to work on an assignment that might extend till 3 years. Do I need to carry expat insurance with me?

Yes, you can carry an expat insurance with you. With the increase in international mobility around the world, there is also a rise in the range of the expatriate health insurance plans offered all over. These international health insurance plans protect you and your loved ones while overseas.

These plans are similar to your domestic ones except that they provide better benefits. With these plans, you don't need to stick to a specified network of medical service providers or doctors.

There are a lot of other things that need to be addressed for people who travel abroad. It's natural for a traveler to meet with challenges regarding foreign currency, mode of communication, conveyance to health care centers etc. Expat insurance addresses all these needs.

Expat insurance also proves beneficial since it covers you for a longer period of time than most travel insurance plans. Travel plans are good only when you're going abroad on a short business trip or on a short vacation.

Hi Cassiem
3 years is a long time and an expatriate insurance would be a very good idea indeed. Your health insurance may be sub-par but an expat insurance covers for a longer period of time. Moreover, if you are moving with your family, your really shouldn't take the risk. I've heard expatriate health insurance is not very expensive either.

The benefits offered by travel insurance are limited to a certain period e.g. 6 months. Under such circumstances if you get injured during the 7th month while you're traveling you'll need to pay for your treatment. Similarly, if you'd get injured within the 6 month benefit period and the treatment goes past it, then also you'd need to pay for the bill. Expat insurance saves you from all these hassles.

See, while deciding for your Expat insurance, make sure all your personal as well as family needs are met. Also keep an eye on your finances as well as your Travel program. If it's possible, prepare a list of benefits that you may require under your plan.

In the event you'd need to apply for an individual expat insurance, make sure you have your medical information with you. These individual plans are always underwritten medically. Usually, these insurance application processes are smooth and saves time.
